ARAB105 - ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY - 1 credit

Students study the history of Arabic calligraphy and are introduced to all known types. The aim of this course is to enrich the students' skill in Ruq`a handwriting.

ARAB120 - ARABIC LANGUAGE SKILLS I - 3 credits

This course is a platform for equipping the students with the basic skills in the Arabic language through reading, listening and writing various types of literary texts. Essential linguistic issues are handled such as spelling rules, the use of dictionaries. Heard and read common mistakes are dealt with in depth. Each study unit includes texts of a variety of genres. These are left for the students to read, comprehend and appreciate. Students are expected to use these texts to practice the skills they learn in each unit.

ARAB121 - ARABIC LANGUAGE SKILLS II - 3 credits

This course is sequel to ARAB120. Students reinforce the skills they have gained in the previous course (ARAB120). They are given a variety of literary and scientific texts to read and criticize. They are assigned subject to express orally. They have to produce descriptive reports and have to write essays. Students also exercise listening to given topics and express the ideas in writing. Special attention is given to methods of academically sourcing their information using the APA style.

ARAB142 - PROSODY - 3 credits

This course comprises a study of the science of prosody and its origin: the forms of Arabic poetry, rhyme and meters. A study will be made of prosody meters as formulated by Al-Khalil-Ibn Ahmad. The course involves a study of the music of modern Arabic poetry and the innovations introduced into it.

ARAB211 - JAHILITE LITERATURE - 3 credits

This course deals with the living style at the Jahiliyya times through Jahiliyya chosen texts. It uncovers the literary characteristics of the era. Hence the students learn the prime role of the Jahiliyya poetry, the major issues it dealt with, how it was read and written down, and how in given cases it was plagiarized. In this course the students are subjected to the subjects the Jahiliyya Poem dealt with as well as to its artistic forms. They analyse extracts of the Mu'allaqat, Lamiyyat al-'Arab, as well as chosen extracts of the well-famed Obituaries. The students are also subjected to chosen narrative genres of the era.

ARAB212 - ISLAMIC LITERATURE - 3 credits

This course deals with the literary, both literature as well as narrative, works of Early Islam Era. It looks into the role of Islam in the general lifestyle. It examines the effect the Qur'an and the Hadith had on the Arabic Language and its Literature. Students analyse the Islamic Poem of the Era. They analyse the human, temporal as well the spatial dimensions of the Umayyad Era, the environment of its poetry. It examines the literary environment in Hijaz, Najd, Syria and Iraq. Students look into the idea of specialised poetry of those areas. It makes a general view of the literature, and the narrative works of the time. Students are made aware of the artistic genres of the Umawi Era and its more prominent men of letters and poets. They examine the artistic characteristics of the Era through reading chosen exemplary extracts.

ARAB213 - TEXT ANALYSIS - 2 credits

This course comprises the study of various literary genres in classical and modern literature. Emphasis is on the use of modern critical theories in context as: lexical, grammatical, morphological and semantic. Attention in this course is given to the most important modern critical studies of text analysis.

ARAB231 - COMMERCIAL CORRESPONDENCE - 3 credits

This course concentrates on office written communication skills in translation. Students are trained on writing and translating different commercial correspondence, inter office memos, reports, minutes and other forms of correspondence. They are also trained on skills of translating visual, detailed and brief letters. They are also trained on translating the curriculum vitae in both languages.

ARAB251 - INTRODUCTION TO GRAMMAR I - 3 credits

This course introduces students to the various aspects of Arabic morphology, Students study in this course Arabic grammar under the following headings: etymology, inflection and derivation, parts of speech, word formation, temporal structure of the verb, gender in nouns, division of the noun according to number, diminution and attribution, the relative adjective, pronouns, modes of the verb and conjugation. Application exercises will be included.

ARAB252 - INTRODUCTION TO GRAMMAR II - 3 credits

In this course students study Arabic grammar under the following headings: diptotes, declension of nouns, nominal sentences, verbal sentences, the subject and the predicate, the weak verb complements to the verbal sentence, requests, conditional sentences, the vocative, "exclamations" and oaths, the forms expressive of surprise or wonder, and practical applications of grammatical analysis

ARAB253 - INTRODUCTION TO GRAMMAR III - 3 credits

Students study in this course the following subjects: a general view of the verb and its forms, the voices, tenses of the verb, moods, numerals, particles, adverbs, complements, conditional and particles of meaning.

ARAB258 - THE ARABIC LIBRARY - 3 credits

This course deals with the major classic and contemporary books of the Arabic Language and Literature books. Students get to know the authors of these books, the methods used in writing them as well as their linguistic and literary roles in being considered invaluable bases for the sciences of the Arabic Language. The students are taught how to best benefit of these resources for both linguistic and literary research endeavours. Students following this course are required to produce reports and research-works pertaining to the issues learnt in this course.

This course is offered to students of other Departments. It comprises the study of the following subjects: language, its structure and methods of study. Students also study the science of linguistics, the characteristics of Arabic sounds, Arabic grammar as: parts of speech, structural patterns and construction of utterances.

ARAB311 - ABBASID LITERATURE - 3 credits

This course involves the study of the development of the intellectual, economic and social fields in the Abbasid period through the study of poetry, focused on prominent poets such as Abu-Tammam, al-Buhturi, and Al-Mutanabiy. Varieties of prose, their development, and prominent prose writers such as Ibn-ul-Muqaffa', Al-Jahiz, and Badi' az-Zaman are also studied.

ARAB312 - ANDALUSIAN LITERATURE - 3 credits

This course deals with general features of cultural and literary life in various periods of Al-Andalus history to help students become acquainted with some aspects of Andalusian literature. The course focuses on the following Andalusian poets: 'Asim bin Zayd, Hasanah Tamymyah, Yahya al-Ghazal, Ahmed Abdrabu, Ibn Hani, al Qastali, Ibn Shuhayd, Ibn Zaydun,Ibn al-Khatib. Students also study arts in which the Andalusians excelled such as, al-Muwashshahat, az-Zajal, as well as the influence of Andalusian environment on poetry.

ARAB314 - MODERN POETRY - 3 credits

This course comprises the study of the renaissance of Arabic poetry in the 19th century, through specimens and development of various schools in modern Arabic poetry as: ad-Diwan, Apollo and al-Mahjar. The course includes a study of free verse poetry and its development. Extracts from poems of the most prominent poets are analyzed.

ARAB315 - PALESTINIAN LITERATURE - 3 credits

In this course students study the following subjects: characteristics of the literary renaissance in Palestine, traditional and modern trends in poetry, the national trend in Palestinian poetry. Texts by Abulkarim al-Karmi, Ibrahim Tuqan, and Mahmud Darwish are also examined. The short story, the novel prominent novelists and various trends in Palestinian prose literature are also studied.

ARAB317 - POPULAR LITERATURE - 3 credits

This course familiarizes students with various genres of popular literature in Palestine and the Arab World. Special emphasis is placed on the myth, tale and lyrical poetry. Students study methods of research and analysis of popular Arabic and Western literature and the tools used in gathering, classifying and analyzing collected material.

ARAB318 - ARABIC LANGUAGE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD - 3 credits

This course seeks to acquaint students with the Arabic language system and its various levels in general. It also teaches students how to identify a numberof basic rules in grammar, morphology, spelling and rhetoric, in reference to the Palestinian Arabic language curricula for the lower basic stage (1-4). The course also introduces teaching methods to be used by teachers in teaching children the language at this stage.

ARAB321 - PRINCIPLES OF TRANSLATION - 3 credits

This course seeks to acquaint students with the Arabic language system and its various levels in general. ARAB322 - JOURNALISTIC TRANSLATION - 3 credits

This course is an introduction to the principles of journalistic translation from English to Arabic and vice versa. Students receive training on translating a wide range of subjects and styles. There will be focus on translating articles from various branches of knowledge representing a variety of styles in order to acquaint the student with requisite vocabulary and terminology.

ARAB323 - LITERARY TRANSLATION - 3 credits

This course comprises translation of selected texts of modern and classical Arabic literature, including extracts from the works of major Arab geographers and historians. Selected works of famous English writers will be translated into Arabic.

ARAB325 - TECHNICAL TRANSLATION - 3 credits

This course aims at training students on different cultural, formal and economic texts by highlighting the problems facing translators and the appropriate means and techniques to solve them. Students will be trained on translating passages relating to forms, applications, bulletins, brochures, instructions, certificates and others. Training in this course also includes use of computer software to design brochures.

ARAB326 - EDITING & REVISION - 3 credits

This course is designed to help students avoid common mistakes in Arabic and English when translating texts. It trains students on the skills of revision, editing and layout of translated texts, including titles, introductions, footnotes and appendices. The end product must fulfill the technical criteria and standards of the original text.

ARAB327 - LEGAL TRANSLATION - 3 credits

This course aims at providing students with adequate training on translating legal texts and highlighting main problems encountered by students and ways of tackling them. This highly specialized course is of a great significance at present due to high demand on legal translation. Students will also be trained on translating texts related to governmental transactions, Sharia courts and civil courts.

ARAB329 - SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION - 3 credits

This course is intended to train and develop students' competence in simultaneous interpretation. It also trains them on the techniques of both simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. It is based on practical work. Students are expected to interpret speeches and lectures on a variety of subjects.

ARAB331 - ARABIC CRITICISM - 3 credits

This course comprises the study of classical Arabic criticism under the following titles: the concept of literary criticism, Arabic criticism during the Jahilite, Islamic, Umayyad and Abbasid periods, the works of Ibn al-Mu`taz, Ibn Sallam, Qudamah, al-Amidiyy and al-Qadi-al-Jurjani, and literary criticism in the sixth and seventh centuries A.H.

ARAB332 - MODERN CRITICISM - 3 credits

Students study in this course modern criticism under the following headings: the nature of the criticism process, elements of literary work, origins of literary criticism, Greek criticism, methods and schools of literary criticism. The course also involves a study of the ten main characteristics of narrative and dramatic Arabic literature.

This course aims at familiarizing students with dramatic and narrative art in modern Arabic literature by studying its historical development. Special emphasis is placed on the study of the origins of the narrative and dramatic art in Egypt, Syria and Iraq. Modern narrative and dramatic texts by Tawfiq al-Hakim, and Najib Mahfuz are critically studied

ARAB351 - STUDIES IN GRAMMAR - 3 credits

This course aims to introduce students to specific topics in Arabic syntax and morphology selected from the traditional primary sources of Arab grammar in order to familiarize them with their style and to help understand these texts.

ARAB352 - GRAMMATICAL PRACTICE - 3 credits

In this course students practice grammatical structures as: the nominal sentence, subject and predicate, case forms, the verbal sentence, the verb and its modifications, subject, complements, participles and numbers. Students study texts to help them understand the syntax of the sentence.

ARAB354 - MODERN LINGUISTICS - 3 credits

Emphasis in this course is placed on the development of linguistics and its research methods under the following headings: language, phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, Arabic sounds, intonation, the Arabic word, the syllable, stems, as well as transformational and generative grammar.

ARAB371 - SCIENCES OF THE QUR`AN & HADITH - 3 credits

This course aims to introduce students to the inimitability of the Qur'an and the Prophetic Tradition. This course also comprises a study of the Qur`anic sciences, Meccan and Medinite exegesis and their impact on Arabic literature, the kinds of al-Hadith, its sources and methods of transference and quotation in language and literature, and the influence of al-Hadith on literature and grammar. It focuses on an analysis of the stylistic features of certain texts from both sources.

ARAB389 - SENIOR SEMINAR - 1 credit

The course aims to give senior students the chance to do original research on a topic in Arabic language and literature under the supervision of an instructor from the Department. Students will give an oral presentation of their research to their colleagues and teachers followed by a discussion of the main results.

JMCO140 - INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALISM - 3 credits

This course focuses on studying the concept of media and its traditional platforms (Radio, TV, and Newspaper) and new platforms (Social Media, Electronic Media), and their functions and importance in society. It also focuses on the differences between media outlets, how they work, and their relationship with the audience, in addition to the management of the media outlets, means of communication, and its artistic basis.

JMCO141 - INTRODUCTION TO INTERACTIVE MEDIA - 3 credits

This course focuses on the concept and mechanisms of electronic media and the differences between it and traditional media. It also introduces the usage of modern technology in producing media content by utilizing the internet, which allows the journalist to employ media content (news articles, reports, investigative reports, media messages, dialogues, interviews) to interact with the audience, which makes them more engaged Students will also learn how to archive photos and retrieve them when producing new reports. They will also learn in this course the basics of media communication and how to deal with audience reactions to discussion topics in media programs. In addition they learn how to build new media programs and how to promote their media content electronically through the public interactive media platforms and build platforms for themselves or for the media agency they work for.

This course focuses on media coverage of events and on the elements and specifications, and editing basics of the news, and news reports. The course will tackle the professional structure and its various sources in audio-visual and electronic media, and the difference in editing these types of media.

JMCO143 - EDITING INTERACTIVE MEDIA CONTENT 2 - 3 credits

This course digs deep into the applied side of editing news, reports, and reportages made to be published in traditional and new media outlets, in addition to producing news and visual reports by utilizing modern interactive media technology, and building platforms (websites) to broadcast the news on.

This course focuses on teaching students how to use computer programs in digital editing, graphic design, photo processing, editing, in addition to archiving media material and building opinion polls programs.

This course deals with the importance of ethics in Mass Communication work, such as property rights, libel, insult, defamation, and slander, public freedoms, and respect of human rights, and to avoid discrimination on the basis of (religion, ethnic background, sex, and color), and the types of local, Arab, and International media codes of ethics that rule the media work.

JMCO251 - MEDIA LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH - 3 credits

This course develops the understanding of languages and their implementation and promotion in the field of media and mass media, including the media language in English. It studies the properties of the language, features, and elements and the difference between media and literary and scientific languages and the media terms and its linguistic, political and informative meanings, in addition to writing media scripts in English and learning the rules of language editing (Grammar and Morphology), this include applied studies of examples of foreign media scripts.

JMCO253 - MEDIA LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION IN ARABIC - 3 credits

This course focuses on the Arabic language used for media and communication. Students will study the features and elements of this language and the difference between this language and literary or scientific language. They will also learn about media concepts and terms and their political, linguistic meaning, and how to develop a media script and the basics of language editing (Syntax, Morphology, correcting written and spoken errors). This includes applied examples of Arabic media text.

JMCO255 - VIDEOGRAPHY IN INTERACTIVE MEDIA - 3 credits

In this course students will learn the theoretical and practical techniques of videography basics with a focus on the types of videography and camera techniques, and the role and artistic basics of videography. This includes the multiple moves of the camera, and taking shots and scenes including indoors and outdoors shooting. This includes practical training.

JMCO257 - LIGHT AND SOUND IN INTERACTIVE MEDIA - 3 credits

In this course students learn about lighting technology and its role in producing interactive media content with a focus on the concept and basics of indoors or studio lighting, and outdoors lighting. It also focuses on how to record indoors and outdoors audio and the usage of sound mixers and the types and usage of sound detectors. This includes practical training.

The student studies in this course the concept, role, and significance of broadcast journalism compared to other mass media. Students study in this course modern technologies in mass media production. Students study Premiere and Photoshop programs. They study television shooting techniques for movies and documentaries. Students produce documentaries and television reports as training using modern technologies.

Students study in this course the history of written Palestinian Arabic Journalism since the Oatham era until the Palestinian national authority. Students also study the audio and visual history of the Palestinian journalism and especially under the control of the Palestinian authority. JMCO341 - MULTI-DIMENSION DESIGN 2D, 3D - 3 credits

This course studies and analyses the 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional drawing and its basis in graphic and multimedia design, that allows picturing objects in still and motion modes. The course also deals with designing charts used in TV newscasts and the design of print covers. In addition, the course focuses on designing and using 3-D Max, which allows the learners to design media and advertisement work and artistic ads and animation inside a bigger design in creative innovative ways.

This course deals with theories of media's impact and its role in achieving mass communication, such as agenda, cultivation, reliability, social, satisfaction, receiving, and semiotic, and its role in creating individual and collective awareness and its psychological, cultural, and political impact.

This course deals with concept and types of advertising (Commercial, Services, Social, Suggestive), and the technology used for advertising (Electronic Boards, Direct Street Ads, TV and Radio and Electronic Ads.) in addition, the course covers the goals of these ads, their professional authoring, and psychological/ behavioral design theories and how advertisements impact their audience.

JMCO346 - MULTIMEDIA AND MASS COMMUNICATION - 3 credits

This course focuses on teaching the technologies used in producing media content, such as video, audio, and photo processing applications. In addition, students will learn how to design interactive videos and its relation to mass media, video production and editing, which combines between the computer and hard drive. JMCO364 - MEDIA SPOKESPERSON AND MASS COMMUNICATION - 3 credits

The course focuses on the media spokesperson, her role and importance, and the skills of mass communication with the media. Students will learn how to organize and lead press conferences and the rules of promoting the goals of the organization they are representing utilizing interactive media. They will also learn to deal with the camera, preparing press releases, and organizing press conferences for their organization. The course also focuses on learning presentation and written and oral expression skills; drafting and editing statements; preparing and editing media summaries; and presenting video programs and commentary skills.

In this course students will learn the concept of media campaigns and understand its details and specifications. JMCO488 - LANGUAGE SKILLS IN MEDIA TEXT ANALYSES - 3 credits

In this course, students study the language skills necessary for analyzing media texts, such as criticism, text analysis and composition skills. The course also develops skills of proper composition of sentences, and linguistic structure, syntax, and aesthetics, and the coherence and connotations of the text, then to analyze written news and articles, and to understand and read texts within the average proper level of understanding.

MEAR120 - MEDIA ARABIC BEGINNER - 4 credits

The course provides students with an introduction to Media Arabic. It is designed for students who have never studied Arabic before and begins with an introduction to Arabic sounds and letters through learning common words and short sentences, basic vocabulary and simple sentence structure. The teaching focuses on the functional use of Arabic and communication in context by means of reading and speaking the language as it appears in television discussion panels. The teaching will raise the curiosity of the students; promote a love of Arabic and a desire to learn the Arabic language. Moreover students are exposed to samples of audio-visual media as preparation to Media Arabic Level II (MEAR 121).

MEAR121 - MEDIA ARABIC INTERMEDIATE - 4 credits

The course is designed for students who have successfully finished around 60 academic hours of Arabic study. Students learn longer sentence structure, read longer texts and review basic grammar when needed. To promote understanding, each text is followed by a series of questions. In answering the questions, the students improve both their comprehension and their ability to express themselves orally. Step by step, the students are trained in listening to original news from different broadcasts including Al-Jazeera, BBC Arabic and al-Arabiyya.

MEAR122 - MEDIA ARABIC ADVANCED - 4 credits

The course is designed for students who have completed 120 academic hours of Arabic study. The students study both written and recorded material taken from the well-known Arab and foreign broadcasts such as Al-Jazeera, BBC Arabic and al-Arabiyya. In the beginning, students hear the news recording and then check the written text. New vocabulary is listed at the bottom of each text. After learning the text in its written form, students go back to the recorded text and practice it. The instructor will teach the students how to express the text orally. The course will provide advanced instruction in grammar and stylistic features of modern Arabic. Each student will prepare a project related to the innovation of modern Arabic. At the conclusion of the course, the students will present their project in Arabic in front of the class.

This course is designed for students who have reached a high level in Media Arabic and want to advance their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. The course will also have emphasis on perfecting the right pronunciation of Arabic. This course is for students who have studied Arabic for at least 2 years. Students at this level are expected to learn and activate vocabulary items that belong to different genres (politics, history, religion, economy, etc.). The students are also expected to generate written pieces that reflect a higher level of complexity and style. Writing or speaking for specific purposes and unique audiences is emphasized.

SPAR124 - SPOKEN ARABIC PROFICIENCY I - 4 credits

This course is designed for students who have 120 academic hours of Spoken Arabic or equivalent in literary Arabic. The students learn longer, more complex texts on different topics focusing on stylistic features of the Palestinian dialect. Each text is followed by a series of questions. The grammar of the dialect will be compared with literary Arabic grammar for those who have studied literary Arabic previously. The instructors deliver the material only in Spoken Arabic.

This course is designed for students who have reached a high level in Spoken Arabic and want to improve their speaking skills. Students in this course will also sharpen their pronunciation skills of the Palestinian dialect .This course provides additional practice at a level to help students attain a higher level of development (e.g., listening, speaking) and linguistic accuracy in Palestinian Colloquial Arabic. The teaching and learning process in this course is communication-based and the emphasis is placed on context.

SPAR126 - SPOKEN ARABIC PROFICIENCY III - 4 credits

This course is designed for students who have reached a high level in Spoken Arabic and want to improve their speaking skills. Students in this course will also sharpen their pronunciation skills of the Palestinian dialect. This is an upper-level course for students who can already handle basic communicative skills in Colloquial Palestinian Arabic and are ready to work on more advanced conversational skills such as talking about current events, and expressing abstract ideas and opinions. The teaching and learning process in this course is communication-based and the emphasis is placed on context. Students are required to watch TV broadcasts of cultural, historical, and religious programs; analyze more complex topics and present their analysis orally in class; and engage in lengthy discussions with other classmates.
